How Pinocchio Got It Wrong... And Then Got It Right

"If you want to be right, do things the right way because if you do things the wrong way that’s

“No fibbing, now! You know you’re not supposed to tell lies. A lie only grows and grows ’til you
get caught! Plain as the nose on your face!
 
“Take the straight and narrow path. And if you start to slide, give a little whistle! And always let
your conscience be your guide.
 
“Treat your elders with respect, and don’t be fooled by bad advice. If a guy named Foulfellow
invites you to a place called Pleasure Island, don’t go! I mean, he’s got the word, ‘foul’ right in
his name! But trust me on the conscience thing.”

The captivating characters of fairy tales and classic children's literature can provide a
wonderful springboard for discussion of values and integrity. We will focus on four such stories
in this class and apply them to personal qualities of a good and successful life:
 
Close ties with family and friends
Core values, including self-respect, honesty, and kindness
Doing your personal best and trying again when you fail
Listening to your conscience and the help of good people around you
Respect for others and their culture
