Detective Logic (4 weeks)

“It belongs to you, but your friends use it most. What is it?”

Answer: Your name!

Riddles are just a warm up for the real detective logic we will encounter! Welcome to the class where students, soon to become detectives, will learn crucial detective and reasoning skills!

Logical reasoning can improve our understanding of everyday life, and even help us change the world.

Here is an example of thinking without logic:

A cloud is 90% water. A watermelon is 90% water. Therefore, since a plane can fly through a cloud, a plane can fly through a watermelon.

It’s easy to make mistakes in our thinking, so how can we make sure we avoid them? Luckily, there are lots of ways we can strengthen our brian’s logic muscles! Students will learn how to avoid those mistakes and to master other tips and tricks to ensure that logic is the primary tool used by our detectives. Welcome to the class where students, soon to become detectives, will learn crucial detective and reasoning skills! Logical reasoning can improve our understanding of everyday life, and even help us change the world.

As Sherlock Holmes might say, “There is no time to be wasted! The game is afoot, and we must have our wits about us!”

More Mythology (and More Wonders and Blunders!) (4 weeks)

It may be all fun and games on Mount Olympus, but that doesn’t stop the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses from wreaking havoc down on earth. Terrible creatures—Medusa, Cerberus, the Minotaur, Hydra, griffins, the Manticore, etc.—were created by the gods and goddesses of the Greek and Roman world as a result of their whims and wishes. The monsters of mythology do not stop there! Titans not only roam the earth, but one must also hold it up for all of time!

You definitely don’t want to meet a titan face-to-face! As we learn about ancient mythical creatures and titans, students will have the opportunity to create their own mythological creatures and backstories! Solving the riddle of the Sphinx is just the beginning!

Poetry Explorations (4 weeks)

“The Vulture”

by Hillaire Belloc

The Vulture eats between his meals,

And that’s the reason why

He very, very, rarely feels

As well as you and I.

His eye is dull, his head is bald,

His neck is growing thinner.

Oh! what a lesson for us all

To only eat at dinner!

Poetry is so much fun! During this month, we will be reading poems, reciting poems, and writing our own poems. Poetry comes in all shapes and forms, varying from strict rhythm and rhyme to free verse, void of rhyme, and clear beat. We will learn how to read with rhythm, play with words, and communicate through this highly versatile compositional form. This will be an experience to remember, as we explore poetry through a child’s eyes: the beauty of swinging, the consequences of bad behavior, the trials of learning, and the joy of overcoming. As we recite, we will work on improving our articulation and expression, as well as expand our memory—important skills that will pay off in spades throughout life. My children still remember the poetry they memorized at this age. Their only regret—they wish they had learned more!

Explorers and Pathfinders (4 weeks)

As the spring and summer begin to bloom, it’s time to explore! Come learn beyond your backyard with explorers and pathfinders who discovered everything from America to the deep sea to the North Pole! It was not all smooth sailing, each explorer had to overcome immense obstacles in order to expand their knowledge of the ocean, land, or space! The word “Impossible!” does not exist in their vocabulary!

Listen to the stories of women and men who braved the unknown and changed the world forever! We will be taking a close look at the lives of Marco Polo, Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea, Sylvia Earle, Matthew Henson, Neal Armstrong, Zheng He, Amelia Earhart, Leif Erikson, Barbara Hillary, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, Edwin Hubble, and Sir David Attenborough.
