Starting from Scratch: Cells and DNA (10 weeks)
Did you know that the DNA in every human cell gets damaged over 100 times a day, however, our bodies have very clever systems in place to act as repair mechanisms? In this class, we will learn the requirements for life and why cells are considered the smallest living organisms. We will survey the different types of cells, the organs that make cells work, and how cells eat and drink. Finally, we will learn about the structure and function of DNA and how DNA fits inside each of our cells.
 
Rockin' Away: Geology (6 weeks)
Did you know that the earth is slipping along the San Andreas fault at a rate of about 2" per year? This means that in about 15 million years Los Angeles and San Francisco will be neighbors. This is one of many cool facts our geology students will cover in our awesome Basic Geology studies. In this class, we will go over a little bit of the basics of many facets of Geology and spend time learning about plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, deposition, the rock cycle, and the differences between rocks and minerals.
 
The Black Plague to COVID-19 (5 weeks)
What’s the difference between a bacterial infection and a viral infection? What exactly IS a parasite? Join us in this class about diseases to learn about our immune system, pandemics, bacteria, viruses, and more! We will even be able to grow our own bacteria in petri dishes to see how important it is to wash our hands!
 
The Name's Bond, Ionic Bond: Introductory Chemistry (11 weeks)
Chemistry plays a role in everyone's lives and touches almost every aspect of our existence in some way. Through our study of Chemistry, we grow to understand matter and energy and the interaction between them. Chemistry sometimes is called the "central science" because it connects other sciences to each other, such as biology, physics, geology, and environmental science. This is the first of two classes for beginning Chemistry at TTK. In this class, we will learn what Chemistry is, learn about chemical reactions, learn about density, and study the different states of matter, as well as do some really cool experiments!
