Ecology: Can You Hear the Plants and Animals Talking? (8 weeks)In the face of climate change, the destruction of the rainforests, and pollution, every student should be versed in Ecology. Ecology is the study of how plants and animals need each other in order to survive. In scientific terms, this interaction is called a symbiotic relationship, and there are many different types!
Here are three symbiotic relationships I bet you didn’t know about:
1. Did you know that after a meal, a crocodile will walk onto the riverbank, find a cozy spot, and sit with its mouth wide open? This action signals a plover, a brave little bird, to enter the crocodile’s mouth to pick off tiny bits of food that remain in the huge reptile’s teeth.
2. Did you know that when coyotes and badgers work together, they combine their specific hunting skills to increase their chances of catching prey? While the coyote chases the prey on the prairie, the badger will hide in the burrows of the prey to grab them as they return home
3. Sea anemones will hitchhike on the backs of hermit crabs, providing the anemones with a lift over the seabed. While getting a ride, the anemones use their tentacles to grab leftovers from the hermit crabs’ meals. And what does the crab get out of it? A great deal! Crabs seek out sea anemones because the anemone will fight off hungry octopuses.
In addition to learning about these amazing relationships, we will also learn about the dangers of introducing new species into an environment. And for a fun final project, you will have the opportunity to create your own small, working ecosystem in your own world!
Atom Adventures: The Importance of Being Positive (8 weeks)
This fast-paced and exciting Chemistry Course covers matter, change of state, atoms and the periodic table, chemical bonding and polar molecules, chemical reactions, solutions, and acids/bases.
Each class includes a hands-on activity or lab to demonstrate and reinforce concepts. This class, coupled with Introductory Physics, meets and exceeds Core Curriculum 8th grade Science. Chemistry comes alive as we measure and mix, record reactions, and contemplate the results of our many experiments! With our live online meeting platform, students can watch Ms. Makayla demonstrate lab techniques during class, ask questions, and, later, show their own experiment results with their online colleagues. Students will learn valuable character traits that lead to success as they weekly study famous chemists, including Linus Pauling (a pioneer in atomic structure and quantum research), Amadeo Avogadro (famous for the “mole”), and Dmitri Mendeleev (founder of the periodic table). This course is designed to whet a student’s appetite for physical science, learning chemistry fundamentals, completing cool experiments, and exploring this dynamic subject as a possible career.
Science Through History (6 weeks)
We will explore different fields of science and how the theories and understanding of the world around us have changed over time. We will learn about famous scientists from the past and what they contributed to their fields. We will spend time learning about the history of chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy, and physics. At the last class, students will “dress” as a scientist and share information they’ve learned about them.
Buggy Adventures (10 weeks)
Did you know that 97% of the animals in the world are invertebrates? In this class, we will learn ALL about invertebrates! In addition to learning about all of the different kinds of insects, we will learn about echinoderms, worms, sponges, molluscs, and many more! While learning about these amazing animals, students will be able to begin their own bug collections!
