Fin Whales Perform Fractions (4 weeks)

Fin whales are the second largest whale species growing up to 85 feet (26 m) long and 160,000 pounds (72.3 metric tons). To keep themselves nice and healthy, they have to eat a lot of fish. Sometimes, they have contests to find out which of them eats the most fish, and the judges use fractions to find the winner.

Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:

  • Explore different contexts of money and time to build fraction equivalencies less than 1
  • Explore different contexts of money and time to build fraction equivalencies less than 2
  • Use a table to compare grade 5 fractions with unlike numerators and unlike denominators

More Fractions with Mountain Plovers (4 weeks)

When the Mountain Plover lands on the prairie, it practically disappears. How? By camouflage. To be sure they know how to disappear just right, they have to have the perfect proportion of colors. So, they fix the problem with fractions.

Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:

  • Use a table to compare grade 5 fractions with unlike numerators and unlike denominators
  • Use blocks to build fractions in a variety of ways
  • Multiply fractions by whole numbers using blocks as a model for a strategy based on multiples of unit fractions

Sunda Tigers Study Time, Money, and Graphs (4 weeks)

Sunda tigers are the smallest tigers and they love water! Sometimes, they find coins in the water—if only they could count them—and other times they spend so long in the water that they would like to know exactly how long. Help the Sunda tigers study time, money, and graphs (for finding the best time of day to swim) in this fun class!

Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:

  • Solve elapsed time problems using addition and subtraction
  • Identify all American coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar, dollar)
  • Add different coin quantities to add up to $10 USD
  • Organize and represent numerical data on a line plot to a quarter and eighth unit scale, and use fraction operations to interpret these line plots to answer questions about the data

Geometry with Great White Sharks (4 weeks)

Did you know Great White sharks can smell blood from 5km (3.1 miles) away, swim up to 56 kph (35 mph), and can sense electrical fields in water? They can! And they only can because they know geometry.

Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:

  • Students measure angles by using the relationship between rotation and angle measurement
  • students construct different types of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons, and use a ruler and protractor to measure side lengths and angles
  • Students represent hierarchical relationships as they classify geometrical figures that have up to 3 dimensions

  • Day and Time: Fridays, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM ET
  • Bundle Duration: 16 Weeks
  • Dates: February 7 - May 30, 2025
    • No class April 18 (Spring Break)

    • DreamBox math app*

*There is an additional $45 charge for DreamBox, which is a one-time purchase for the entire school year. Here at The Thinking Kid, we utilize the DreamBox Math App to enable our students to practice math skills outside of the classroom. DreamBox engages students through math games to test their proficiency in math concepts discussed in class. DreamBox access is essential to student success in our math program. If you have previously purchased DreamBox, please contact us at miriam@thethinkingkid.org
