Add and Subtract with African Forest Elephants (4 weeks)
Unlike their smoother relatives, forest elephants have many cracks and crevices in which water becomes trapped after bathing. Because this is how they maintain 75% of their body temperature, it's vital that they know exactly how many wrinkles they have, even when some new ones appear or other ones disappear. Let's get adding and subtracting!
Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:
- Use the standard addition algorithm and a place value workspace to solve addition problems involving up to three-digit addends
- Use the standard subtraction algorithm and a place value workspace to solve subtraction problems involving up to two three-digit numbers
- Choose efficient strategies for solving addition problems with 3-digit numbers
- Choose efficient strategies for solving subtraction problems with 3-digit numbers
Mountain Gorillas Can Multiply (4 weeks)
Mountain gorillas can get really heavy: males get up to 398 lbs (180kg) and females can weigh as much as 200 lbs (90kg). To keep track of their weight as they're growing, it's imperative that they know how to multiply.
Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:
- Explore the commutative property (3 x 5 = 5 x 3) and apply various strategies to solve double-digit multiplication problems
- Find common multiples of two factors (2 - 12)
- Identify factors of numbers to 100
- Use partial product strategies to build arrays and solve multiplication problems using the distributive property
Dugongs Do Division and Multiplication (4 weeks)
Dugongs (sometimes referred to as sea cows) eat seagrasses from the sea floor. To be sure they're eating the right amount of seagrasses, they employ the essential skills of division and multiplication.
Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:
- Choose friendly equations (partial quotients), a rectangular array, and the distributive property to mentally solve multi-digit division problems
- Solve multi-digit multiplication problems by creating friendly partial products represented on an open array
- Solve multi-digit multiplication problems by representing optimal partial products on an open array
- Compose arrays and use the distributive property to solve multi-digit multiplication problems
Polar Bears Practice Place Value (4 weeks)
When figuring out what a polar bear is, it's essential to place them in the right category. Polar bears are actually classified as marine animals and are the only bear species to be considered as such. Who knew, right?
Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:
- Use groups of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones to build and pack amounts of objects and determine totals (up to 9,999)
- Create decimal numbers using place value dials and learn the relationships between powers of ten
Through in-class activities and independent practice, students will:
- Students measure angles by using the relationship between rotation and angle measurement
- students construct different types of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons, and use a ruler and protractor to measure side lengths and angles
- Students represent hierarchical relationships as they classify geometrical figures that have up to 3 dimensions
