Add & Subtract Automaticity Experts: Sumatran Elephants (4 weeks)
Sumatran Elephants didn’t become experts at adding and subtracting by choice, but by necessity. It all happened one day when one Sumatran Elephant was counting her ribs: 1, 2, … 20. What?! Other Asian elephants only have 19. So, she counted again. She was right! She had 20 ribs. To prove this to other Asian elephants, she had to add them up then subtract them, over and over again. Now all Sumatran Elephants (who have since then learned that they, too, have 20 ribs) have mastered the automaticity of addition and subtraction.
- Students quickly and mentally add and subtract integers.
- Students quickly and mentally add and subtract negative integers.
Greater One-Horned Rhinos: Multiply and Divide Automaticity (4 weeks)
Greater One-Horned Rhinos aren’t just great because they are the second biggest of the rhino species, but also because they know how to multiply and divide.
- Students quickly and mentally multiply and divide integers
- Students quickly and mentally multiply and divide negative integers
Up and Down to 25 with Sea Turtles (4 weeks)
Sea turtles are always on the move. Some travel thousands of kilometers to dine on their favorite jellyfish. If you’re wondering about sea travel, it has its ups and downs. To stay motivated (and on the right course to the jellyfish), the sea turtles multiply all the way down to -25 and back up to 25.
- Students multiply integers with products between -25 and 25
- Students divide integers with dividends between -25 and 25
Operations with Bornean Orangutans (4 weeks)
Bornean orangutans grab fruit with their fingers and palm because they can’t use their thumbs. Imagine not being able to use your thumbs. Now, imagine being able to do the order of operations. Now you know what it’s like to be a Bornean Orangutan.
- Students use the order of operations to evaluate integer expressions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Students evaluate integer expressions involving parentheses and exponents using the order of operations
- Students determine the absolute value of integers between -10 and 10 using a number line.
