Come to the Carribean: Informative and Technical Writing (4 weeks)Hop onto Clear Communication Express as students plunge head-long into informative writing. In an age of seemingly limitless information, useful and organized information is crucial for navigation. Students learn to gather information, sort through it, and present it in a clear, engaging fashion. Event planning, advertising, and information sharing–once only attainable goals–become accessible skills. While writing about ideas that light them up and make them smile, students recognize the beauty of organized communication.
Milestone: Writing informational pieces
Incredible Stories of Incredible People: Biography (4 weeks)We can only be inspired by others if we are aware of them. Students turn back time and explore the lives of relatives, past leaders, and famous individuals in a fun-filled quest for connection. Students ask themselves questions: “What did they accomplish? What do we have in common, and how can I be more like them? What will I do now?” Students write full-sentenced, vivid paragraphs about their role models. By exploring the perseverance and creativity of past individuals, we learn that we can do it, too. What will we leave in our wake?
Milestone: Research-supported paragraphs/tiny essay
Fantastic Explanations: Fable Writing (4 weeks)
Why do dogs wag their tails? Why do rhinos have wrinkly skin? Fables tell us why things are the way they are, though not always truthfully. Students explore fable writing, coming up with their own reasons for why things are the way they are. They discover the morals hidden in Aesop’s fables, and learn to illustrate their own. They tell tall tales and paint the walls with impossible color. While writing fables and tall tales, students discover themselves and the fascinating world around them.
Milestone: Organized, descriptive writing (beginning, middle, end); paragraph explaining a fable
Animal Explorations: Research Paper (4 weeks)
Nothing is more fascinating than the world around us. Students will have the fascinating opportunity to research an animal of their choice in depth. Equipped with unquenchible curiosity, students explore every aspect of the animal. Where is it from? Where does it live? Is it dangerous? Is it cute? Can I have one, Mom? Students learn how to use multiple sources, making notes and connecting information. Through engaging infographics, they share their information in a new media, expanding their audience. What will your student discover?
