Once Upon a Time: Short Stories (4 weeks)“Everybody loves a good story.” - Austin Kleon
Wasn’t it the bedtime stories our parents told us, and the picture books our teachers read to us, that taught us what a story was before we could tell one? In an engaging mix of story telling, illustration, and sequencing, students explore how to tell stories. They tell personal stories, made-up stories, and put themselves in roles and worlds of their own creation. This adventure is one they will not forget, but will rewrite in their heads again and again.
Milestone: Organizing writing (beginning, middle, end); mimic other writing
All About Me: Personal Narratives (4 weeks)Narratives are everywhere: they’re in the phone calls we make, the letters and journal entries we write, and the stories we tell. Students learn how to express themselves and describe their stories in All About Me. Students will cover grammar, sentence structure, and tenses as they explore personal narratives.
Milestone: Organized writing in an independent fashion (planning/outlining)
You Have a Voice: Introduction to Persuasive Writing (4 weeks)
Persuasive writing sits among the most eloquent forms of writing. It embodies organization, understanding of opposing sides, and the emotional convincing of another person. Students persuade each other through example-supported, organized writing. They learn to form an opinion and support it with strong, relevant facts. Weighing differing sides through simple debate, they discover the art of arguments and how to construct their own.
Milestone: Supported, organized writing (research/outlining)
Family Yarns: Tied Up With Letters and Cooking (4 weeks)
We write to express emotion, communicate information, and connect with others. Who better to express to, communicate with, and connect with than our families? In a familial adventure, students write friendly letters to relatives, expressing admiration and asking questions. Students dive into their family history, learning about their origins, traditions, and values. Students involve themselves in the family scene as they explore how to communicate with and remember those they love most.
Milestone: Writing an organized friendly letter/retelling stories
