Graphs, Plots, Volume, Area, and Perimeters with Humphead Wrasse
Have you ever wondered how big a Humphead Wrasse is? It’s big. Humphead Wrasse can grow to 6.7 feet (or 2 meters) in length and weigh up to 400 pounds (or 180 kilograms). It may not be the best-known fish on the reef (even if it is one of the biggest reef fish), but that doesn’t mean it’s bad at math. In fact, Humphead Wrasse are pros with reading graphs and plots and calculating volume, area, and perimeter.
Students organize and represent data by creating picture graphs, tally charts, and bar graphs, and interpreting these graphs to answer questions about the data.
Students organize and represent numerical data on a line plot to a whole, half and quarter unit scale, and interpret these line plots to answer questions about the data.
Students solve problems involving volumes of objects and containers.
Students solve problems involving area and perimeter, including shapes in which the perimeter is the same and the area differs, or area is the same and the perimeter differs.
